Not A "Musical" Comedy, but just as funny... Meet Carla Collins

~ Canadas' Own ~ Comedian Carla Collins ~

By Susan Ponting

Canada’s own comedy darling Carla Collins is arguably the hardest working woman in showbiz. This trailblazing comedian, actor and now author is currently on a book signing tour with the release of Angels, Vampires and Douche Bags; and she’s touring a series of Venus Envy stage shows (where only women and men in drag are allowed in the audience!) If all that’s not enough, she’s got a new sitcom in the works – and she’s writing another book.  To read more...

Welcome Back k.d. Lang

About this Album

This expanded edition of the album, with four additional tracks, is available for pre-order, exclusively at kdlang.com.

Nonesuch Records releases k.d. lang and the Siss Boom Bang’s Sing it Loud on April 12, 2011.

Produced by lang and Joe Pisapia, it is the award-winning singer-songwriter’s first record made entirely with a band of her own since the pair of albums with the Reclines that launched her groundbreaking career over 20 years ago.

This collection of songs reflects the organic, collaborative nature of the sessions, which took place at Pisapia’s Middletree Studios in Nashville. Many of the songs were recorded live in the studio and that energy is palpable. The lead single “I Confess” is one of three songs lang penned with keyboardist Daniel Clarke and Joshua Grange, who plays baritone guitar and dobro. In addition to the original material, Sing it Loud includes a striking version of Talking Heads’ “Heaven.” Pisapia, who plays numerous instruments and serves as the band’s musical director, contributed the title track and co-wrote five songs with lang. Bassist Lex Price (Mindy Smith, Peter Bradley Adams) and drummer/percussionist Fred Eltringham (The Wallflowers) complete the lineup.

Sing it Loud is lang’s first studio album since 2008’s Watershed, which debuted in the Top 10 of the Billboard 200. In 2010, she marked the 25th anniversary of her recording debut with Recollection, a career retrospective.

News & Reviews

  • Sing it Loud, the new album from k.d. lang and the Siss Boom Bang, was released earlier today in Australia, and lang and the band celebrated with a number of early morning TV appearances there. They kicked things off with a performance on Sunrise, offering their own take on an Aussie classic: the Little River Band's hit "Reminiscing," which you can watch here. That was followed by interviews on Today and One Plus One, with a Weekend Sunrise performance to come this weekend.

  • The Belleayre Music Festival in Highmount, New York, has announced its 2011 concert season, and a number of Nonesuch artists set to take the stage there this season: k.d. lang and the Siss Boom Bang, Punch Brothers, and Jessica Lea Mayfield. The festival, situated high atop the Catskills mountains, kicks off on July 3 with a performance from lang and her band. Punch Brothers take the stage on August 27, with Mayfield opening.

 The Drowsy Chaperone

South Simcoe Theatre (Cookstown) presents the multi-Tony winning Canadian musical this April , directed by Scott Hurst, at the Town Hall Theatre. This months profiled artist Joanna Megraw (centre) stars in the title role.  Also pictured are John Bleasby as "Man In Chair" , and Jay Ralston as "Aldolfo".

South Simcoe Theatre Presents The Drowsy Chaperone

The South Simcoe Theatre's production of The Drowsy Chaperone  opens on Thursday, April 7.  It will run until Saturday, April 23, 2011.  This musical speaks directly to the great unspoken desire in all of our hearts: to be entertained.  It all begins when a die-hard Musical Theatre fan plays his favourite cast album on his turntable, and the musical literally bursts to life in his living room, telling the rambunctious tale of a brazen Broadway starlet trying to find, and keep, her true love.

Performances are at 8:00 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays with performances at 2:00 p.m. on Sundays.  Note that the performance originally scheduled for Sunday, April 24, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. has been re-scheduled for Saturday, April 23, 2011 at 2:00 p.m.  For tickets, phone the Box Office at 705-458-4432.

As this production runs without an intermission, refreshments will be available both before and after the performance.  So come early or stay late and enjoy the companionship of your friends and other theatre-goers.
